SKILL TRAINING OF INMATES AT TIHAR JAIL

A PROJECT UNDER INNOVATIVE AND SPECIAL PROJECTS (IS&P), DAY-NULM

  • A project taken up under the IS&P component includes pioneering approaches, innovations to strategies under DAY-NULM, or catalysing efforts in geographical areas where these have not been undertaken before. These projects may include activities not possible to address through the normal course of DAY-NULM implementation. Further, special projects to address livelihood issues of most vulnerable sections like physically-challenged, rag pickers, domestic workers, rickshaw pullers, sanitation workers and other such vulnerable groups may also be taken up. The objective of projects under this component is to implement a time-bound programme to demonstrate an approach that is likely to have wide implications for sustaining urban poverty alleviation efforts.
  • The Tihar Skilling Project approved by the MoHUA, GoI under IS&P component of DAY-NULM and inaugurated by the Hon’ble LG, Delhi aims at extending skill training through various interventions in special restricted zones. The targeted trainees are in a confined enclosure and are unable to access the benefits of any normal training scheme that would enable them to be certified and seek thereon a respectable sustained livelihood through wage or self-employment. In addition, prospective trainees are all serving various sentences derailing them from a normal social life. Such trainees need to be trained with extra attention and focus than from a normal training centre. Most inmates end up committing a crime due to economic poverty as a result of lack of employable skills. This programme empowers these inmates and make them more independent that will eventually rehabilitate them back into a normal life as a respectable citizen. The project is developed with an aim to enable them to have a fresh perspective in life and be independent but will also give the inmates a new approach to life and a rehabilitated way of living.
  • The Project aims to train 1020 motivated and interested jail inmates as Food and Beverage – Service Associate. The mobilisation of the candidates. Post training, the trainees shall go through an assessment conducted by the Tourism and Hospitality Sector Skill Council and the successful candidates shall receive certification. The implementing agency i.e. Primero Skills & Training Pvt. Ltd. shall also ensure placement of the certified candidates.
  • The Project sanctioned by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs is being executed through State Urban Livelihoods Mission, Delhi at State level. The on ground implementation of the training shall be done by Primero Skills, the training partner at the Tihar Jail premises. The Project at ground level shall be executed under the overall monitoring of the Office of Director General, Delhi Prisons at the Tihar Jail premises.
